Strategies for Bidding at Auctions
The items that auctions offer are many, and include vehicles, animals, art, and furnishings for the home. Many people shy away from these events because they are intimidated by the process. No amount of fear is worth missing out on the bargain price deals that can be found at these places. One item will attract many different potential bidders and all of them can offer the price they’d like to pay.

The ultimate goal of these events is to lower your bidding prices so that you can gain a great deal on the item of your choice and this can be a negative experience. Likewise, as long as bidders continue to place bids, the auctioneer will try to raise the price of the items. As with any time a crowd of people gather to shop, not everyone is going to find the same items desirable so not all bidders will bid on the same products. By previewing the items ahead of time, you will have an advantage over the other bidders. You can get a leg up on other bidders by browsing through the event flyers that events use to list their best items. Try to show up at least one hour early so you can take an up close look at the various items that will be for sale; this way you can confidently bid on them when they reach the auction block.
No matter how high the price you pay for an auction product, it will not come with a warranty. Many people make the mistake of finding a desk they want to refinish and not examining it before the auction begins. Not carefully examining the furniture before hand could cause an unsuspecting bidder to wind up with a desk full of particle board instead of genuine wood. There will be many people placing bids around you, but this shouldn’t discourage you from making your own bid. There will likely be many opportunities for you to bid on an object that you want, even if you lose a bidding attempt, because most locations have multiple events.
The fact that people are continuing to bid higher for an item that you are bidding on should not intimidate you into raising your price out of fear of being a ‘loser’. Though an understandable concern, this should not influence your bidding practices at an auction. As you are looking over items before bidding, determine how high of a price you are willing to pay for it and do not allow yourself to bid higher.
For many people, an auction is a source of entertainment even if you don’t actually walk away from the event with anything. You may wish to attend real estate auctions or estate auctions, in addition to other types of events. Many times, people go and observe the bidding process ahead of time so that when they are ready to attend and bid later, they will be ready. In addition, many interesting people will be at these events for you to meet.
